Both of us have taken a slow road toward wine appreciation, beginning with wine coolers and those fruit-flavored wines and eventually becoming interested in mildly tannic reds like local merlots. The trick has been finding something worthwhile for a meager budget, so we decided to drive to the Coupeville waterfront on Whidbey Island for a wine-tasting evening.
