EUROPE, APRIL-MAY '01: LONDON I, ENGLAND
The manuscript room that used to be at the British Museum is now in a nice, new British Library, the biggest library in England. In their displays, they have very old Bibles and written manuscripts. Jane Austen's history of England that she wrote as a teenager as a joke for her family is here. Lewis Carroll told the story of Alice in Wonderland to some children he knew, and one asked him to write it out. He did, very neatly, with illustrations, and that's here. You can see first drafts with crossouts of famous poems. There's also a listening area with Sound Archive selections, such as an interview with a Titanic survivor. There's a large area on printing where we learned about book binding. Steve & I had fun.
