Then we stopped in New Haven to stay a night with Rachel Maxson and her brother, Mike. Rachel was news editor when we were all on The Wheaton Record together, and Mike was our star photographer. Rachel just got her master's at Yale Divinity School, and now she's on her way to Duke for her PhD. Mike was a missionary and is teaching right now. They served us homemade soup with warm bread in their fun top-floor apartment, and then we played a game that Steve won with only minimal I'm-the-guest manipulation. We confirmed in our post-game conversation that Rachel is as brilliant and insightful as we'd always suspected, and Steve was able to lay out to her his plans for a series of spiritual books. This was our second indication (cute family members being the first) that visiting people was going to be the highlight of our trip!
