WASHINGTON, D.C., EAST COAST, APRIL '03
We got this near the White House, but going in was not an option, as the multitude of police cars permanently stationed in the street made clear. Poor little blockaded bollards. (But, here, you can look at historical pictures and take a virtual tour — scroll down.) We were continually surprised (uneasily) by how security-conscious the East Coast was compared with the West. The highways in the D.C. area had big signs with a Terrorist Hotline to phone in tips. There was no escaping the presence of fear.
