Walking the original sidewalk, looking up through glass to the current sidewalk. For about a decade after the fire, financial wrangling kept new sidewalks from being built. Instead, ladders took you from this sidewalk ditch to store entrances above. Eventually, the ditch was closed over and both levels were in use, with these skylights providing underground illumination, until the underground was condemned in 1907.
