CLASSES: FELT HATMAKING—SEPTEMBER '02
Felt is one of the most common hatmaking materials. Think fedoras and cowboy hats, among others. It can be made from wool or fur. Ours was fur, controlled by the Czech fur mafia. It's the only fur felt they allow to get through their stranglehold on the industry, though France makes fur felt for its own use. Still, it comes in many colors, patterns, and finishes. We chose a velour finish, which is nice and soft. I went with black, and Linda picked purple.

You start off with either a capelet (left) or a hood (right). You can see that the capelet allows you a bigger brim. That's mine. I was going for a Garbo slouch look. Linda chose a somewhat shallower crown and an upturned brim.
