After selecting braid and a hat shape, the first step is a base for the braid. We used crinoline, a little thinner than buckram, since it wasn't so much for support as a guide to the shape of the finished hat. After wetting the crinoline...

...we draped it over the hat block and arranged it...

...then pounded in the tacks to block it in the right shape for the crown.
