We sewed flannel on top as far down as it would lie flat. After that point, the sideband would need to cover the buckram. Mine went down about as far as in the top picture (not far) because it was such a high, rounded crown (yes, for my big head to fit in).

Both the flannel and then the fabric sewn on top of that had to be draped like the buckram had originally: straight front back and sides. It would have had to be gathered diagonally, as in this picture, but we pinned it and sewed at the line above where gathering would be necessary.
