Starting early, we packed up several boxes of books, immediately discovered we needed them all again, and then didn't do any more packing until just before we had to leave. But eventually everything we were taking was appropriately prepared for cross-country travel, if by that you mean thrown into a box along with wads of old magazine pages. I remember my hands got so dry. I also remember that spending the extra on professional movers kept looking better.
