EUROPE, APRIL-MAY '01: BATH, ENGLAND
... the requisite tour of the Roman Baths. This is me acting enthralled by the information coming over the self-guided-tour listening device. The baths are very interesting to visit, though. The Romans loved the area's hot springs and built a city here. Their baths, unearthed in the late 1800s, were part of a temple worshiping Minerva, some baths ceremonial and some spa-like, just as in Regency times. If you touch the water, it's still definitely hot, but there are signs warning you not to because of lead poisoning. Steve & I did, anyway. The Roman parts that are left are the bottom gray stone parts, up to where the brown starts on the pillars. From there up is what the Victorians built or even more recent additions. The Roman baths used to have a roof, so back then the water would have been clear.
