EUROPE, APRIL-MAY '01: MUNICH, GERMANY

We took an overnight train from Berlin that stopped in Munich on our way to Austria. By this time, I was sick with a dreadful cold I had caught from poor Diane. We spent part of the day wandering to Apothekes (pharmacists) looking for cold medicine — only to find that in Germany all the medicine is behind the counter and you have to ask for it. So then I spent some time trying to think up the words for "cough," "congestion," "big snot wads," "blech," etc. Finally, I got some cough goop — I will not dignify it with the name "syrup." It was brown, viscous, and herb-flavored. If I were at all nauseated, I would have had to just live with the cough. Travel tip: Bring all-purpose cold tablets along, just in case. Kelly was nice enough to give me her last Contacs once we got into Vienna.
