We saw Baz Luhrmann's La Bohème on Broadway. The director of Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet updated the opera by setting it in 1950s Paris, hiring 20-something singers, putting in his trademark flash, and having the electronic captions retranslated to be slangy, casual, and Beatnik. He said he wanted to capture the feel of the opera when it first shocked Puccini's world.
