ENGLAND, MAY-JUNE '04
After about a week bumming around Tintagel, we decided to strike out to the neighboring town of Boscastle, where I stayed (and fell in love with Cornwall) during Wheaton-in-England in 1996. We took this windy, narrow path to get there, only somewhat afraid of falling off the cliffs and dying before reaching our destination. A man did just that our first day in Tintagel, and we're not known for our coordination!
The South West Coast Path, now nationally maintained and featuring these little acorn guideposts, was originally created for the coast guard. Cornwall has always been an area of smugglers, and the coast guard had to patrol right on the edges of the cliffs to have any hopes of controlling illegal activities. The path around Tintagel is especially treacherous. Of course, just as we're thinking we'll never make it and are bemoaning the fact that we've drunk all our water, we're lapped by an 80-something-year-old couple with canes. The English are great walkers.
