ENGLAND, MAY-JUNE '04
As it turned out, it was just as hard to leave Cornwall as to get there. Our local bus to the regional coach to catch our train at Exeter was late due to a dog show down the road. We waited, waited, waited...then watched it go by on the other side of the road. I ranted; a local woman kindly commiserated and pointed out alternatives. We couldn't wait four hours till the next run of that bus, since it would mean missing our train. We caught another bus to a larger Cornish town in the wrong direction, then a coach from there to Exeter. We had planned to spend the day in Exeter, but now we were lucky to make our train, which we did. We arrived late and hungry in London and disgraced ourselves by going straight for a McDonald's. Chocolate shakes and fries will calm me down anytime. The next day, we set out to make our last several days in London as fun as our first, a striking contrast to our Cornwall relaxation. Back over the Thames!
We went to a play at the authentically reconstructed Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. In the vein of tradition with a twist, this version of Much Ado About Nothing was performed by an all-woman troupe. We paid the extra pounds to have a seat (though not any extra for a cushion). The groundlings, in front of us, have to stand throughout the performance, although they were given paper hats to protect them from the sun shining through the open roof.
