CALDWELL FAMILY, AUGUST '02
Pioneer Square is the oldest neighborhood in Seattle. This iron-and-glass pergola covered a cable-car stop and a public restroom when it was built in 1909. It was damaged by a truck in January 2001 and was almost rebuilt when we visited it. Fun historic facts: After the facility opened, the toilets were flushed an average of 8,000 times per day, 15,000 times on Sundays when saloons were closed. There were 16 stalls for men and nine for women. To see the construction completed, click here.
