We decided to see how the other half lived, at least historically, so we took a walking tour of wealthy Regency neighborhoods.
Beadles still patrol this elegant shopping arcade to protect the upscale patrons from rabble who break the rules of opening an umbrella, running, singing, or carrying bulky packages — all very lower-class activities.
Here are shops that were around for Jane Austen to shop in! The black-fronted one is a bookstore with large display windows to tempt readers inside, and the aqua-trimmed one further back is Fortnum & Mason, grocers to the Royal Family, as the shop itself proclaims.
